US consumers are particularly interested in intelligent thermostats and security in the smart home

New York, January 28, 2020

In an online survey conducted by SmartEnergy IP among 5,000 Americans from various market segments, smart thermostats and security technologies were high on the list of products that consumers are most interested in.

SmartEnergy IP, a market research firm for the energy sector, conducted the survey in the fourth quarter of 2019 and asked consumers ages 18 and up a series of questions about interest in smart homes and specific product and technology preferences.

When asked what interested them most in smart homes, the customers replied:

34.6% thought the technology was cool

20% said it would help them save money on their energy bills

16.4% said this would improve the security of their home

14.1% chose convenience.

Customers chose the following products and solutions in order of preference:

32.8% put intelligent thermostats at the top of the list

32.2% security selected

28.9% chose intelligent lighting

26.3% chose voice activation (as with assistants at home)

20.2% motion sensors

19.7% intelligent connector

The rest of the respondents either did not answer at all or offered an alternative

The research company expects lifestyle and utility to grow together in the coming year if smart home strategies are integrated and providers – both technology and service – work together to achieve a more strategic direction.
