Google unveils new Ki language module for robots

Google announced a new AI language model to help its robots understand and fulfill simple requests, such as fetching items or cleaning up a spill.

The PaLM-SayCan model was developed for and with Alphabet’s experimental Everyday Robots division. The model is based on Google’s large language model called PaLM (Pathways Language Model).

Google integrates PaLM-SayCan into its robots to understand human commands and select an action based on a set of 100 learned skills. The upgrade enables the robots to break down requests into a sequence of steps and find a way to execute those steps correctly.

According to the company, the robots have shown in real-world experiments that they are capable of executing abstract instructions in natural language with high success rates. The bots planned the correct responses to about 100 user instructions 84% of the time and executed them correctly 74% of the time.

Currently, Google has about 30 ambulatory everyday robots patrolling its offices in Mountain View, Calif.
