Amazon wants to run ads on Prime Video

San Francisco, September 25, 2023

Amazon said it plans to launch ads on Prime Video in 2024 to increase sales and continue to invest in new TV and film content. The company is expected to increase its spending on TV shows, films and music to $20 billion this year, up over 20% compared to 2022.

The new ads on Prime Video will launch in the US, UK, Germany and Canada in early 2024, with France, Italy, Spain, Mexico and Australia following later next year. In the US, Prime members will see the ads unless they pay an additional $3 per month on top of their existing $15 per month Prime subscription. Non-Prime members are expected to pay $12 per month for Prime Video, up from the current $9. Pricing for other countries will be announced later.

Amazon promised to run “significantly fewer ads” compared to traditional TV and other streaming providers, with Variety estimating “limited ads” at about four minutes per hour. With Amazon embracing the new advertising, Apple’s streaming service remains the only major streamer without an ad-supported tier.
