Washington, October 4, 2023
The National Security Agency (NSA) announced that it is opening an AI Security Center to protect US AI systems from cyberattacks and other security threats.
The center will centralize the NSA’s AI security efforts and collaborate with the Pentagon, the technology industry, academia and international partners.
• Outgoing NSA Director General Paul Nakasone announced the move, saying the AI Security Center would be integrated into the NSA’s Cybersecurity Collaboration Center.
• The latter works with the private sector and global partners to strengthen the US defense industrial base against threats, particularly from China and Russia.
• The new center comes as the U.S. government has expanded the use of AI systems in defense and intelligence.
• Meanwhile, U.S. adversaries have increased the use of AI in influence operations. Last month, Microsoft said it had discovered that Chinese government-backed campaigns were increasingly using AI-generated images to target U.S. political candidates and impersonate voters.
