Caltech wants to settle dispute over patent infringements with Apple and Broadcom

San Francisco, October 14, 2023

The California Institute of Technology has agreed to settle its seven-year legal battle with Apple and Broadcom over alleged Wi-Fi patent infringements.

Caltech initially accused Apple and Broadcom of infringing on their wireless communications patents with devices such as iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches that use Broadcom chips.

In 2020, a jury ordered Apple to pay $838 million and Broadcom $270 million in damages for patent infringement.

However, a U.S. appeals court overturned the decision last year, calling the amount “legally unsustainable.” A new trial was ordered but postponed indefinitely after the parties told the court they may have reached an agreement.

Caltech has now agreed to conditionally drop its lawsuit against both companies, preventing it from refiling the lawsuit.

Caltech settled a similar case against Samsung in August and has Wi-Fi patent lawsuits pending against Microsoft, Dell and HP.
