Sony: Operating profit fell 29%

Tokyo, November 10, 2023

Sony reported a 29% decline in operating profit for the July-September quarter, citing higher expenses and weaker sales of its image sensors for smartphones.

The company continues to stick to its PS5 sales target of 25 million units for the fiscal year after addressing the console’s supply shortages.

Sony supplies camera chips to tech giants like Apple, which integrates the semiconductors into its iPhones. This chip division’s profit fell more than 28% in the fiscal second quarter.

Meanwhile, the company sold 4.9 million PS5 units in the second quarter, bringing the total to 46.6 million units sold since November 2020.

To reach its goal of 25 million units for the fiscal year, Sony needs to sell 16.8 million more consoles.

The company reported strong sales of its PS5 exclusive game „Marvel’s Spider-Man 2,“ selling over 2.5 million copies in the first 24 hours.
