Adobe: is the acquisition of Figma anti-competitive?

Brussels, November 16, 2023

Adobe’s $20 billion acquisition of Figma is facing anti-competitive allegations in the EU. Adobe said it was open to reviewing the EU’s antitrust concerns over its largest-ever takeover of a private software company.

The EU antitrust authority launched an in-depth investigation into the deal in August.
Adobe is now awaiting notification of the European Commission’s objections and is open to discussing remedies, its chief lawyer told Reuters.
Regulators fear that Adobe would force a competitor out of the market and reduce competition.

Figma provides cloud-based collaboration tools for developers to build web applications. Its collaboration design software directly competes with Adobe’s XD product.

Adobe argues that the two companies specialize in different markets. It claims the deal is not anti-competitive because Figma does not compete with its Photoshop, Premiere or other products.
