US Senator Hawley Presents Framework to AI Legislation

U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) has unveiled a framework for AI legislation that focuses on corporate regulations. According to Hawley, all AI regulations must be brought through the Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology and Law, of which he is the senior member.

According to Axios, the five principles of the framework aim to:

◙ Licenses are required to create generative AI models.

◙ Create a legal way for people to sue businesses for damages

to sue their AI models.

◙ Impose heavy fines on AI models created without user consent

collect sensitive personal information.

◙ Restrict companies from making AI technology accessible to children or

to advertise them.

◙ Ban the import of AI technology from China and ban US

Companies to support the development of AI in China.

 

Hawley said he plans to continue working with Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), the committee chair, on further bipartisan action on AI legislation.

Other lawmakers, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and several members of the House of Representatives are also exploring ideas behind possible AI regulatory legislation.
