San Francisco, September 28, 2023

Meta introduced its Quest 3 mixed reality headset, which offers full-color “passthrough” so users can see their surroundings in color while wearing the device. The Quest 3 will ship on October 10th. Prices start at $500 for the 128GB base model.

The Quest 3, unveiled today at the Meta Connect event, has more than twice the graphics processing power of Quest 2, the best-selling VR headset of all time.

The Quest 3 is powered by Qualcomm’s next-generation Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip. It has two LCD displays with a resolution of 2064 x 2208, a refresh rate of 90 Hz and a battery life of 2 to 3 hours, matching the Quest 2.

The new headset adopts the Quest Pro’s pancake lenses for a slimmer profile and sharper images.

Passthrough mode:

Double-tapping Quest 3 will exit the virtual world in “passthrough” mode. Users can view the outdoor environment in color, merging the physical and digital worlds for mixed reality experiences.

According to Meta, over 50 new titles will be released for Quest 3 by the end of the year.

It offers full backwards compatibility with Quest 2 games and apps.

More Connect announcements:

Meta also introduced the successor to its two-year-old Stories smart glasses. The Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses start at $299 and can be streamed live on Facebook or Instagram.

Its new meta AI assistant and chatbot generates both text and images. The company is also introducing 28 AI characters in its messaging apps, including ones based on celebrities such as Charli D’Amelio, MrBeast and Snoop Dogg.
