How can the U.S. maintain its innovation edge?

Washington, Jan. 25, 2022

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has launched a bipartisan commission to suggest government policies on behalf of businesses and support progress and regulations in AI. The AI Commission on Competition, Inclusion and Innovation is chaired by former U.S. Rep. John Delaney (D-Md.) and Rep. Mike Ferguson (R-N.J.).

Other members include Rachel Gillum, head of global policy at Salesforce; Shekar Katuri, data science executive at Bank of America; Christina Montgomery, vice president and chief privacy officer at IBM; and others.

The group’s goal is to ensure that the U.S. maintains its innovation edge and promotes fairness in AI. Members will meet with researchers, solicit feedback from stakeholders and hold public meetings to gather information before presenting their solutions.

The first hearing will be held March 10 in Austin, Texas. A final report, to be released in late summer or early fall, is expected to provide suggestions to federal lawmakers for developing a national strategy for AI research and development, fairness, and regulation.

Microsoft also announced a new group, the Artificial Intelligence Industry Innovation Coalition, that will address privacy, employment and other issues related to AI in healthcare.
