The Biden administration announced a plan to distribute $5 billion to states to fund electric vehicle charging stations along highways. The goal is to build 500,000 new electric vehicle charging stations in the U.S. by 2030, five times the current number.
States, as well as Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, have until Aug. 1 to submit plans for electric vehicle charging stations along or near major highways. Charging stations should be located near rest areas and/or other services and must be no more than 50 miles apart.
Federal regulators are expected to approve the plans in question by the end of September.
The $5 billion was appropriated by Congress as part of the bipartisan $1 trillion infrastructure bill signed by President Biden last year.
The bill’s National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Formula Program will provide another $2.5 billion in discretionary grants for „corridor and community EV charging stations“ at a later date. “
Background: At least a quarter of all carbon emissions still come from the transportation sector, primarily through tailpipe emissions.
