Open AI: Sam Altman has been changing CEO again for a few days

San Francisco, December 7, 2023

Sam Altman has returned as CEO of OpenAI and Microsoft is getting a non-voting observer seat on the nonprofit board that oversees OpenAI.

In a blog post, Altman announced the makeup of OpenAI’s new board and leadership and shared the company’s immediate priorities.

• OpenAI’s board terminated Altman’s employment on November 17 after a „communication breakdown.“

• Less than a week later, Altman was reinstated.

• The board now includes former Salesforce CEO Bret Taylor, who chairs, as well as former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and former member Adam D’Angelo, the co-founder and CEO of Quora, who was among those in favor of the removal by Altman.

• In an X post, Taylor mentioned that he would step down from the board once it was fully staffed and the company was stable.

• An unnamed Microsoft representative will join the new board as a non-voting observer. His company owns a 49% stake in OpenAI’s for-profit unit.
