Elon Musk’s Neuralink company could begin human trials of its brain-computer interfaces in the near future. The company is currently hiring a clinical trials manager, suggesting that Neuralink brain implant trials could begin later this year if the FDA approves.
The trials are designed to help people with severe spinal cord injuries gain neural control over a computer cursor. After successfully demonstrating the implant in a monkey and a pig, the device could be used to „restore whole-body functionality“ in quadriplegics and tetraplegics, Musk said.
While research and treatment of brain and spinal disorders is the more immediate application of the technology, Musk said Neuralink’s longer-term goal is to synchronize the human brain with artificial intelligence and achieve a „symbiotic relationship between humans and AI.“
In addition to a clinical trials manager, Neuralink is also hiring a clinical trials coordinator. Both positions are based in Fremont, Calif.
