No artwork for NFTs without AI – software

Berlin, Feb. 6, 2022

AI software is reportedly being used to generate artwork for NFTs (non-fungible tokens) in record quantities. Apps being used include Hotpot.ai’s NFT generator and Wombo’s Dream app, which uses AI to create original artwork based on a single text description.

Another example is the text-to-art generator Eponym. According to the publication Dornob.com, Eponym’s first offerings, created with human artists, sold out in a single night on the OpenSea NFT marketplace.
Dornob reports that many NFT creators „find the process of co-creating with AI surprisingly liberating.“ The results, he says, are often almost indistinguishable from human-created art.
OpenSea reported $14 billion in revenue and 1.8 million active users at the end of 2021. It hosts the AI Art House, a marketplace for AI-generated art that releases a limited collection of 1,000 works as collectibles.
The update comes after a digital artwork created by the humanoid robot Sophia sold as an NFT for $688,888 last year.
A research paper questions who should actually get credit for the art after a portrait created by an AI fetched $432,500 at a 2018 Christie’s auction.
