San Franciso, Feb. 12, 2022.
Developers have spotted hints of a new AR/VR operating system that could run Apple’s upcoming mixed reality headset. Mentions of the new „realityOS“ have been spotted in Apple App Store upload logs and open source code, suggesting the company has a standalone operating system specifically for AR and VR products.
The operating system has the internal code name „Oak.“ Various media outlets are reporting that Apple is now delaying the release of the headset by several months to 2023 due to development issues related to overheating, software and cameras.
The headset is said to be able to switch between full virtual reality and augmented reality, where digital content is superimposed on the physical world. It is expected to have M1 processing power.
Apple also plans an app store for the device, selling games and enabling video streaming and conferencing.
It would be Apple’s first major product innovation since 2015, when the company introduced the Apple Watch.
