Researchers have developed a voice-based mobile app that uses artificial intelligence to categorize a patient’s mental health. This progress can lead to a tool that helps psychiatrists diagnose mental illness.

The study, published in the journal Schizophrenia Bulletin, found that many people in remote areas have no access to psychiatrists or psychologists, while others have financial reasons for not talking to a doctor.

Researchers at the University of Colorado in Boulder, USA, said that therapists largely base their treatment plan on listening to a patient talk, although they reject it as an old, subjective and unreliable method.

With this in mind, they developed a machine learning technology that can detect everyday changes in language and determine whether the symptoms are improving or not.
