According to Reuters, Tesla plans to introduce a low-cost EV battery with extended life next year. The battery should help Tesla match the price of its EVs to that of its gas-powered models. The battery life will be about one million miles.
In addition to longer life, the batteries can also be reused to store and supply energy to the grid. They will first be offered in China in the Model 3 vehicles and will be built in collaboration with CATL, the Tesla teams, lithium-ion battery expert Jeff Dahn from Dalhousie University and other groups. The batteries are expected to be launched in early 2021.
Tesla’s battery is expected to reach or exceed $100 per kWh, an important benchmark at which EV production costs will match those of gasoline-powered vehicles. Earlier research by Bloomberg’s New Energy Finance originally predicted that this milestone would be reached by 2023.
GM has recently announced that „Ultium“ batteries will also reach $100 per kWh.
