Vestager: Ki technology used correctly can work wonders

Brussels, 1.7.2020

AI-based predictive policing techniques can unfairly target immigrants and people from certain ethnic groups, says Margrethe Vestager, Vice-President of the European Commission for Digital Policy. Vestager argued that AI technology „can work wonders“ if used correctly. Used incorrectly, it can increase prejudice and prejudice against coloured people and other groups.

Vestager made the remarks during today’s European AI forum. You can read her opening message here.

The Vice-President said it is „unacceptable“ that law enforcement agencies use predictive policing to target people of certain ethnic groups.

She quoted the European Commission’s White Paper on Artificial Intelligence, published in February, which sets out future arrangements for artificial intelligence. The deadline for feedback on the paper has recently expired.

European Digital Rights, a lobby group, recently called for a ban on predictive police software in the European Union. Several AI experts have spoken out against the predictive practice, saying it is biased and based on corrupt data.
