Munich University of Applied Sciences founds Institute for Machine Learning and Intelligent Systems

Munich, 22.7.2020

After the Munich University of Applied Sciences already founded the „Institute for Energy Efficient Buildings and Neighbourhoods“ (CENERGIE), the „Institute for Materials and Building Research“ (IMB) and the „Institute for Sustainable Energy Systems“ (ISES) last year, the „Institute for Applications of Machine Learning and Intelligent Systems“ (IAMLIS) is now following.

In all application areas, the focus is on building up competencies in the field of artificial intelligence. The focus here is on AI solutions that bring great benefits to the digitalised society and industry. Prof. Dr. Peter Krzystek sees great potential for the new institute „against the background of the current AI strategies of the EU, the Federal Government and the Bavarian State Government.

The new research institute also promotes projects with industrial partners and partner universities. In cooperation with IBM and the Technical University of Munich (TUM), HM is using a particularly powerful high-performance computer in the OpenPower@TUM project to develop and test new applications in the field of artificial intelligence and data science.

Existing projects, which already use the powerful infrastructure of the IMB Server Cluster, solve deep learning tasks or process complex algorithms for various machine learning applications. Experiments for testing machine algorithms in concrete applications are to follow. The projects will be integrated into teaching in the participating faculties and accompanied by several Bachelor and Master theses.

The six founding professors are Prof. Dr. Peter Krzystek and Prof. Dr. Andreas Schmitt from the Faculty of Geoinformation, Prof. Dr. Peter Mandl, Prof. Dr. Georg Peters and Prof. Dr. Lars Wischhof from the Faculty of Computer Science and Mathematics and Prof. Dr. Alfred Schöttl from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology.

Their goals: The intensification of research activities in the application areas distributed systems, text mining cluster analysis, multi-level decision systems in the environment of dynamic systems, networked intelligent transport systems, automotive/ambient assisted living (assistance robots) and forestry.

Background: Munich University of Applied Sciences

The Munich University of Applied Sciences (https://www.hm.edu/) is a university of applied sciences with around 500 professors

professors, 750 lecturers and around 18,000 students one of the largest

German universities. It offers over 85 bachelor and master courses in the fields of technology, economics, social sciences and design.

With its excellent network in Munich as a business location, it maintains close contacts with professional practice and is involved in application-oriented teaching and research. The Munich University of Applied Sciences has been awarded a prize as a founding university in EXIST III, IV and EXIST Potentials.

In addition to professional competencies, it teaches its students entrepreneurial and sustainable thinking and acting. Trained in interdisciplinary work and intercultural thinking, its graduates are prepared for a digitally and internationally networked working world. In rankings they are among the most sought-after by employers throughout Germany.
