Is China overtaking USA in innovation?
New York, August 3, 2020
The former CEO of Google, Eric Schmidt, says that the US public and private sectors need to develop new innovation and talent in AI.
Speaking at a Brookings Institution event this week, Schmidt said the US risks falling behind China in innovation if it does not step up its AI efforts for national security.
AI is the key to national security in the US, which is lagging behind China in areas like facial recognition, Schmidt said during the event.
Schmidt, chairman of the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence, made a similar comment about the federal government’s AI efforts in a February column in the New York Times.
Schmidt also leads a federal initiative to establish the U.S. Digital Service Academy, a university that will educate students in areas such as AI and new-generation technology. The federal AI commission recently recommended the university to Congress.
Schmidt was CEO of Google from 2001 to 2011 and left the company in February as a technical consultant.
