18. August 2020CATL: Soon EV battery without cobalt and nickel
Beijing, 18.8.2020
The Chinese battery manufacturer CATL is developing an EV battery that does not use cobalt and nickel. Both are expensive, hard to find minerals. The company did not provide any information about the composition or cost of the new battery.
Tesla has considered using a cobalt-free CATL lithium iron phosphate battery in its Chinese vehicles. It is unclear whether this is the same battery that CATL has just announced.
Elon Musk urged the miners to produce more nickel and promised a „huge contract“ for those who mine in an efficient and „environmentally friendly way“.
According to Wood Mackenzie, nickel consumption for EV batteries is expected to increase by 64% between 2019 and 2025.
CATL supplies batteries to Tesla, Volkswagen, Daimler, Honda and Toyota and other EV manufacturers.
