Google fires co-head of ethical ki team

San Francisco, Jan. 3, 2021

For „multiple violations“ of the company’s code of conduct, Margaret Mitchell, co-head of the ethical AI team, has been fired. Google made the announcement over the weekend.
Mitchell had been leading the Ethical AI Team along with Timnit Gebru. Gebru is a prominent AI researcher who left the company in December after Google asked her to withdraw an AI research paper she had co-authored. Gebru had criticized the company’s treatment of women and minorities, particularly in hiring, and received flak from colleagues and Internet users as a result.
Mitchell’s tweet, „I’m fired.“ came a day after Google announced a restructuring of its responsible AI efforts. After that, Engineering VP Marian Croak will now oversee the new center of excellence at Google Research for responsible AI technology development.
