Is IBM selling its Watson Health business?
New York, 1.3.2021
According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, IBM is considering selling its Watson Health business. Its annual revenue is reported to be around $1 billion.
Watson Health was seen as one of the company’s most important steps toward AI and healthcare. But reluctance among physicians to adopt the technology and problems collecting and analyzing data under medical privacy laws may have led to a lack of growth in the division, it said.
A statement from IBM stressed the Watson Health business will continue to evolve to meet the needs of patients and physicians.
A WSJ note notes that trying to apply AI techniques to diagnose or treat complex health problems is a major challenge. The reason: lack of access to big data. Algorithms trained on one population often can’t be applied to others, he said. Tech companies also lack the deep knowledge needed to truly understand how healthcare works, he said.
