Dongfeng deploys self-driving cabs in Wuhan

Shanghai, 3/3/2021

Chinese automaker Dongfeng Motor has deployed a fleet of self-driving cabs in the Chinese city of Wuhan, racing with technology companies such as Baidu and WeRide. The service is expected to be offered nationwide.
Dongfeng’s fleet in Wuhan consists of more than 40 modified Dongfeng Fengshen all-electric vehicles equipped with high-resolution cameras, laser radar and millimeter-wave radar – the key technologies a pilotless car needs to understand its 360-degree environment. The vehicles are also powered by 5G-enabled communications systems, vehicle-mounted supercomputers and the Beidou navigation system, the Chinese equivalent of GPS.
The robot cabs, which can be booked online, are available for free on more than 10 designated routes in the Wuhan Economic and Technology Development Zone. Each vehicle is equipped with a safety driver who takes control of the car in case of emergency.
