China has named AI and brain science as one of the „frontier technologies“ it plans to focus on in the next five years and beyond in its latest five-year development plan. The goal is for China to end up better able to compete with the United States.

In AI, China is focusing on developing chips for AI applications and open-source algorithms. The country is also focusing on machine learning in decision-making and other areas.

„Brain science“ refers to „brain-inspired computing“ and „brain-computer fusion technology,“ although the plan does not describe what it would involve. However, the Chinese are believed to be pursuing trajectories similar to Elon Musk’s with Neuralink.

China’s other pioneering technologies include quantum information, integrated circuits or semiconductors, genomics and biotechnology, clinical medicine and health, and space, earth, deep sea and polar exploration.
