WeRide may also test fully autonomous vehicles

San Francisco, 4/21/2021

Chinese self-driving car startup WeRide has received permission to test its fully autonomous vehicles on public roads in San Jose, California. WeRide will be able to test its vehicles on roads with a speed limit of 45 mph. The tests will take place on weekdays, but not during heavy fog or rain.

WeRide is the seventh company to receive permission to test its autonomous vehicles in the state without a human safety driver. The other six are AutoX, Baidu, Cruise, Nuro Waymo and Zoox.

Fifty-six companies have received permits in California to test their vehicles with a human safety driver. WeRide received its first permit in 2017.

It has raised $513.6 million since its inception in 2017. In February, it received approval to launch a ride-hailing service in Guangzhou, China.
