NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter successfully completed its first test flight on Mars Monday morning. This is the first powered, controlled flight on another planet. The four-pound helicopter maintained an altitude of 10 feet for 39.1 seconds.
Ingenuity arrived on Mars aboard NASA’s Perseverance rover, which landed on the planet Feb. 18 after a six-month journey from Earth.
A statement said, „117 years after the Wright Brothers succeeded in making the first flight on our planet, NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter has accomplished this amazing feat on another world.“
Ingenuity held a piece of fabric from the wing of Flyer 1, the plane the Wright brothers used to perform the first powered flights on Earth in 1903.
A video of the flight is available here.
