Samy Bengio is now doing research for Apple

San Francisco, 5/4/2021

Apple has hired former Google research manager Samy Bengio to lead a new AI research unit. Bengio previously oversaw Google’s ethical AI team, which was led by former Googlers Timnit Gebru and Margaret Mitchell before they were fired.

Bengio worked at Google for about 14 years and is an early pioneer of the Google Brain research team, where he worked on deep-learning algorithms for AI systems. Another Google team member, Dr. Alex Hanna, said back in February that the restructuring ousted Bengio, who is also brother of Turing Award winner Yoshua Bengio.

At Apple, Bengio will report to John Giannandrea, senior VP of machine learning and AI strategy. Giannandrea previously served as Google’s head of AI and search.
