Apple’s XR headset likely to arrive in Q2 2022

San Francisco, 6/13/2020

Apple will probably launch its XR headset in Q2 2022, suspects Apple – analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

The VR/AR headset will be used for entertainment and gaming. Some work applications are also possible. The retail price is estimated to be at least $1,000.

For Kuo, the device is a head-mounted display (HMD) that will offer a video see-through AR experience. Genius, an iPhone lens maker, is a key supplier for the headset’s lenses, he wrote.

The headset – which is primarily VR-centric – is expected to have a total of 15 cameras, far more than the current 2-5 in most existing VR hardware. It would have high-resolution microOLED displays and „innovative biometrics“ that would use six of the cameras, Kuo speculates.

Previously, we reported that Apple could announce the XR headset in the coming months, possibly during Apple’s virtual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).
