Ulrich Kranz is poised to boost the Cupertino tech giant’s EV plans, which have had an erratic history for nearly a decade. Back in 2018, Apple hired an outside man in Doug Field , who worked for Elon Musk on Tesla’s Model 3.

Kranz spent 30 years at BMW, where he most recently developed its line of electrified vehicles, the i3 and i8. He left the company in 2016 to become chief technology officer at California EV startup Faraday Future before leaving it to co-found Canoo Inc, an electric vehicle startup.

Canoo was also tied to Hyundai to develop EVs until the startup announced last month it was moving away from contract development projects.

In February, Apple said it had ended talks with South Korea-based Hyundai Motor Co. to jointly develop an autonomous electric car for production in 2027.
