Will Intel acquire GlobalFoundries?

New York, 21.7.2021

The Wall Street Journal reports that Intel is in talks to acquire GlobalFoundries. This is a US semiconductor manufacturer valued at $30 billion.
If Intel – the largest U.S. chipmaker – succeeds in the takeover, it would be a big step in orders of magnitude of its competitors from Taiwan. The share of chips produced there in the world market is 63%. World market leader TSMC has a share of 54%. The second largest producer is South Korea (18%). Samsung has a market share of 17%.
In March, Intel’s new CEO Pat Gelsinger promised to invest $20 billion in expanding its chip production in view of the global chip shortage.
