Beewise has begun selling its AI-powered autonomous beehives in California. The agri-tech startup plans to distribute tens of thousands of the „Beehomes“ across the state over the next two years.
Background: diseases, pesticides and climate change are partly responsible for the high rate of bee mortality, which is 40% annually. To combat this, Beewise has developed a beehive that uses artificial intelligence, computer vision, and precision robotics to monitor insects and, for example, apply pesticides when a hive has been attacked by parasites.
A Beewise hive can house ~2 million bees. The technology was among Time Magazine’s 100 Breakthrough Inventions for 2020.
