Google and Facebook now also active in submarine cable business
San Francisco , Aug. 19, 2021
Google and Facebook are building an undersea cable system that will connect Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, Guam, the Philippines and Indonesia. The Apricot cable is scheduled to be operational in 2024 and will be 7,500 miles (12,000 km) long. It will help provide broadband access and 5G mobile connectivity to millions of people in the Asia-Pacific region.
There are about 400 undersea telecommunications cables worldwide that provide voice and Internet connectivity between countries. Technology companies are increasingly investing in undersea connections to expand access to their services.
In March, Facebook announced plans to build Echo and Bifrost, two undersea cables that will connect the U.S. to Indonesia via Singapore.
