Toyota to build factory to produce electric batteries in North Carolina

Washington, Dec. 8, 2021

Toyota announced plans to build a $1.29 billion electric car battery production facility in central North Carolina that is expected to be operational in 2025.

The four production lines at the Greensboro-Randolph Megasite will total enough lithium-ion batteries to power 800,000 pure electric and hybrid vehicles per year.

Toyota plans to expand the plant to produce enough energy cells for 1.2 million vehicles per year. The plant is expected to create 1,750 jobs and run on 100% renewable energy.

Toyota chose the site for its local infrastructure, high-quality education system, access to a diverse and skilled workforce, and friendly environment for doing business.

The project is part of a larger $3.4 billion investment Toyota is making to expand its battery production in the U.S. over the next decade. Toyota has committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2050. Earlier this year, a senior executive said the company aims to make all of its factories carbon neutral by 2035.
