Allen Institute: Majority of Americans are AI illiterate
New York, Dec. 11, 2021
According to the Allen Institute for AI (AI2), only about 16% of Americans who took a national AI literacy quiz passed with a score of 60% or higher.
The Institute and Echelon Insights surveyed 1,547 people with 20 “true/false” questions on basic AI skills. They concluded that “the majority of Americans are AI illiterate” and that serious efforts are needed to widely disseminate factual information about AI.
According to AI2, YouTube and social media are the primary sources of AI information, but it is often not vetted, prioritized, and/or disseminated in an ideal way. The institute sees many untapped opportunities for incorporating AI into school curricula, starting with basic concepts in middle school and more advanced demos and analysis in high school. Reaching everyone else is more difficult, the institute said. The U.S. needs a “systematic way” to disseminate AI facts and information widely.
The institute recommends that the Biden administration’s National AI Initiative develop a standard for AI literacy. It urges companies to educate their employees and users “about the true capabilities and limitations of AI.”
