BMW demonstrates color change technology

Munich, Jan. 10, 2022

BMW has demonstrated vehicle color-changing technology on a concept car, the BMW iX Flow, at CES. The experimental car is wrapped in a type of electronic paper that can change exterior colors to black, white and some shades of gray.

The vehicle’s surface coating is based on e-ink technology, the same e-paper used for e-reader screens. The body shell is coated with millions of microcapsules, each as wide as a human hair.

The microcapsules contain black and white pigments that are positively and negatively charged, respectively.

When the user selects a setting , an electric field is excited that forces either the black or the white pigments to collect on the surface of the capsules and change the color of the vehicle.

The project is in the advanced research and design phase and is not expected to be commercialized anytime soon.
