Nuro now offers driverless delivery vehicle

San Francisco, Jan. 15, 2022

Nuro has unveiled its third-generation driverless delivery vehicle, which is equipped with an external airbag to reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accident. The flagship vehicle, also called Nuro, uses lidar, cameras, radar and thermals to navigate the roads and reaches a top speed of 45 km/h.

The AV’s compartments can fit 24 bags of groceries, and it can carry up to 500 pounds.

Chinese company BYD North America will supply the hardware for the vehicle. The companies will produce the new vehicle at their Lancaster, California, facility and at Nuro’s southern Nevada facility, which is scheduled to open later this year.

Nuro claims its fleet will be powered by 100% renewable electricity, sourced from wind farms in Texas. Kroger Co. has now signed a contract to use the new vehicle to deliver groceries in Houston. Nuro has already tested its technology in pilot projects with Kroger, Walmart, Chipotle, CVS, FedEx and others.
