DHL invests $15 million to purchase stretch robots

Berlin, Feb. 1, 2022

Logistics giant DHL announced a $15 million investment to deploy Boston Dynamics‘ Stretch robot in its North American warehouses over a three-year period. Stretch uses a robotic arm and smart gripper to move boxes in and out of trucks and stack pallets for deliveries.

The first fleet of robots will be tasked with unloading trucks at DHL logistics centers starting this spring. DHL plans to gradually add more tasks and deploy more robots at its facilities over the next few years.

Boston Dynamics, which is part of Hyundai, and DHL have already teamed up to develop and test Stretch’s prototype. The robot can transport 800 cartons per hour. It is considered a commercial version of the Boston Handle robot, which transports cartons. It identifies cartons and navigates autonomously using AI technology known as computer vision.
