According to Elon Musk, SpaceX could launch its next-generation Starship spacecraft into Earth orbit this year, despite ongoing regulatory and technical challenges.
During a presentation late last week at SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas, Musk gave some key updates on Starship, the most powerful rocket ever built.
Musk expressed confidence that the fully reusable Starship will be able to reach orbit by the end of this year. The first flights will carry Starlink Internet satellites into orbit. Later, NASA plans to use the Starship to take astronauts to the moon, which is now planned for as early as 2025.
Musk said he eventually wants to transport cargo and crew members to Mars and establish a permanent settlement there. The system, which consists of the Starship spacecraft on a Super Heavy launch vehicle, could be reused for up to three launches a day.
On Thursday, the company unveiled an animation showing what a launch would look like.
SpaceX has already conducted a series of test flights of the prototype at Starbase.
The company is now awaiting FAA approval for the test flight, which Musk said “could be granted in March.”
