AMD completes acquisition of Xilinx

San Francisco, 2/16/2022

Advanced Micro Devices has completed the purchase of semiconductor competitor Xilinx for about $50 billion, one of the largest acquisitions ever in the chip industry.

AMD had announced the acquisition on an equity basis in October 2020 to diversify and fill gaps in its product line.

Xilinx makes computer chips known as field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) that are reprogrammable and flexible for use in 5G networks, data centers and other industries.

AMD can integrate the FPGAs into its CPUs and GPUs. The company said the acquisition will help it capture a larger share of the $135 billion cloud, smart and edge device market.

AMD’s Lisa Su will become CEO of the combined company and Xilinx CEO Victor Peng will serve as president of the new Adaptive and Embedded Computing Group.

SoftBank’s attempt to sell its Arm chipmaker to Nvidia officially fell through earlier this month. The $66 billion deal came under pressure from antitrust regulators in the U.S., U.K. and EU. SoftBank announced that it will instead seek an IPO for the British chip designer.
