Chinese chipmaker Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) reported record sales of $5.44 billion in 2021, despite being blacklisted by the U.S. Commerce Department.
China’s largest chipmaker also announced plans to expand its production capacity and has allocated USD 5 billion for this purpose. After that, the monthly capacity could be increased by 20,000 to 150,000 8-inch wafers.
The sanctions forced the company to shift from chips for smartphones to more sophisticated nodes for automotive and industrial applications.
