How Google Maps protects safety of Ukrainians

San Francisco, 3/3/2022

Google Maps has temporarily disabled some live traffic features in Ukraine to protect people’s safety. Google says it has disabled the general live traffic layer in addition to activity information for businesses and enterprises.
The live traffic features rely on anonymous location data to show traffic data and the „busyness“ of stores, which could show the progress of the ongoing invasion.
Google says it took this step after consulting with Ukrainian authorities. While global access features have been disabled, drivers using navigation features in the region can still access live traffic information.
The update came after Jeffrey Lewis, a professor at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in California, reported that he was able to see the first signs of the invasion last week using the traffic layer. Lewis was able to track Russian troops moving toward the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv.
