Brain implants: Not exactly popular

Computer chip brain implants were considered the worst AI technology for society in a Pew Research Center survey on the rise of AI.

The center surveyed 10,260 U.S. adults about six AI technologies designed to “improve humans,” namely facial recognition, social media algorithms, robotic exoskeletons, brain chip implants, driverless cars and gene editing.

Respondents were most concerned about brain chip implants that could help people process information faster. Fifty-six percent said this was a “bad idea for society.”

On a personal level, 80% of respondents said they would not want a brain chip implant like the one being developed by Elon Musk’s Neuralink, even if it were available. Andererseots However, 77% said they would support brain implants for medical applications, such as restoring mobility to paralyzed people.

After brain chip implants, respondents were most concerned about driverless personal vehicles and algorithms to detect misinformation on social media sites.

Facial recognition to detect criminals received the best response, with 46% of respondents calling it a “good idea for society.” Some 45% of respondents expressed equal enthusiasm and concern about the rise of AI technology
