Google says its AI-powered spam protection system SpamBrain identified six times more spam websites in 2021 than the year before.

The system, launched in 2018, prevents users from clicking on fraudulent sites or sites infected with spyware or malware.

According to Google, SpamBrain has reduced hacked spam by 70% and reduced so-called „gibberish spam“ on hosted platforms by 75%.

Hacked spam refers to websites that use spyware or malware to steal credentials or send users to malicious sites.

Gibberish spam involves flooding websites with keywords in nonsensical text to improve online rankings.

According to Google, more than 99% of search queries are free of spam. Algorithm updates in 2021 also led to a 40% drop in fraud results.

Anti-spam systems that use AI are necessary because spammers are constantly looking for ways to bypass the filters, Google said.
