Pentagon promises responsible use of AI
The Pentagon has released a paper outlining how it plans to use AI responsibly. In the document, Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks says the U.S. must increase its AI investment to counter China and other adversaries that are increasing their investments in AI technologies that “threaten global security, peace, and stability.”
Hicks said the Defense Department must use AI technologies to “keep pace with these evolving threats.” To do so responsibly, the 47-page document lists specific ways to advance AI based on the Pentagon’s “Six AI Principles.
These include RAI governance, soldier trust, the AI product and acquisition lifecycle, requirements validation, a responsible AI ecosystem and AI workforce. According to the Pentagon, the new guidelines are intended to gain public and Army trust.
