Is TikTok a spy tool?

London, Aug. 5, 2022

The British parliament shut down its TikTok account on Wednesday. The move came after parliamentarians expressed concern that TikTok could be used as a surveillance tool by the Chinese government.

The decision to close the parliament’s TikTok account came just a week after the account was opened.

Senior MPs had written to the speakers of the lower and upper houses of parliament, claiming that the new account jeopardized data security.

The letter raised concerns about the relationship of ByteDance, Tiktok’s parent company, with the Chinese government.

European TikTok users‘ data is stored in Singapore and the U.S. and can reportedly be accessed by Chinese employees.

TikTok claims engineers in China have limited access to data stored globally.

The company plans to build a data storage facility in Ireland in 2023.
