AI could soon help decode animal communication. The California-based Earth Species Project believes AI and machine learning will detect animals‘ subtle signs.

Earth Species Project researchers explained that animal communication is more complex than human communication because the same sound at the same pitch can mean different things to different animals.

The first step in understanding animal communication is to separate the specific acoustics in their natural habitat. While the ultimate goal of the project is to figure out how animals communicate, researchers believe other positive things can be done for the scientific community, such as helping scientists break down sounds that can help a bird sing its natural songs.

ESP officials explained that the most important aspect of this effort is to obtain data that will help the AI system sort through the issues important to the field.
