Amazon: Out of telehealth into home health services

San Francisco, 8/25/2022

Amazon said Wednesday that it will discontinue its telemedicine service Dec. 31, saying it is not the right long-term solution for its enterprise customers. The Amazon Care service offers free telemedicine consultations, virtual emergency room visits and paid home visits for basic health services.
The service first launched in 2019 as a healthcare service for some Amazon employees, and it later expanded to corporate partners such as Hilton, Precor and its Silicon Labs. Customers didn’t see enough value in the service, according to The Washington Post.
In a memo, Amazon’s SVP of Health said the decision was not made lightly and only after „many months of careful consideration.“ Yet Amazon had only announced plans to expand its care service in the U.S. in 2021. In February, virtual visits were rolled out nationwide.
That Amazon continues to keep an eye on healthcare becomes clear when you see that .Amazon is on the list of bidders, for the acquisition of Signify Health. This is a technology-driven provider of home health services. This is matched by rumors that Amazon is looking to acquire primary care provider One Medical.
