Microsoft and ByteDance team up on Ki project

San Francisco, Aug. 28, 2022

Microsoft and Chinese company ByteDance have collaborated on an AI project to help companies run their AI applications more efficiently. They made the announcement at the Ray Summit conference in San Francisco, which took place this week.

Work on the project began more than a year ago and is being led by engineers from TikTok owner ByteDance and Microsoft. The KubeRay software is designed to run AI applications that run on multiple computers, which is called distributed computing.

AI startup Anyscale also contributed to KubeRay. Anyscale organized Ray Summit and recently raised $99 million for its Ray software and tools, which help companies streamline and scale AI projects and applications.

Previously, Microsoft attempted to acquire TikTok’s U.S. business from ByteDance, but the deal fell through in 2020. The collaboration is notable given the ongoing rivalry between the U.S. and China over AI and other technological advances.
