Deutsche Telekom to launch its own 5G smartphone in Europe

Bonn, Sept. 30, 2022

Deutsche Telekom has announced plans to launch its own 5G smartphones across Europe in 1923 to improve consumer access to 5G.

The T Phone 5G smartphone was developed in collaboration with Google and is expected to launch on Oct. 5 in Austria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Montenegro, northern Macedonia, Poland, Romania and Slovakia. Deutsche Telekom plans to make the 5G smartphones available in Germany in early 2023.

The new devices were developed based on the expertise and economies of scale created by T-Mobile US‘ own-brand „REVVL“ smartphone line, the European telecommunications provider said.

„At a time when the high price of 5G smartphones is a barrier to accessing faster connected technology for many people, the launch of T-Phone and T-Phone Pro is an important step in reducing the digital divide,“ it said in a statement.

In terms of specs, the standard T Phone features a 6.52-inch display, 4500 mAh battery, Mediatek Dimensity 700 octa-core chipset, triple rear camera with a 50 MP main unit and a 5 MP front camera.

Meanwhile, the T Phone Pro offers a 6.82-inch screen and a 5000mAh battery, and it uses the same chipset, but it has an additional main camera and an improved front module. Both 5G devices run the Android 12 operating system.

The standard phone is priced at 199 euros (195 euros), while the Pro device costs 249 euros. Deutsche Telekom added that it will offer „attractive“ rate packages starting at 1 euro per month.

„We know how important 5G access is for everyone, as it will play an important role in our shared digital future. With the affordable and feature-rich T Phone and T Phone Pro, we are bringing the benefits of 5G into the pockets of even more customers in nine European markets. With these new devices, our customers can harness the power of our ever-expanding 5G network, from entertainment to countless digital products and services – all at a very affordable price,“ said Dominique Leroy, Member of the Board of Management for Europe at Deutsche Telekom.

Deutsche Telekom recently highlighted that 92% of households already have access to the operator’s 5G network, while LTE coverage reaches 99% of the German population.

Deutsche Telekom also said it is currently using 3.6 GHz spectrum to provide 5G services at more than 2,000 sites in Germany.

In June, Deutsche Telekom announced that it was using spectrum in the 700 MHz range for the first time to provide 5G services. The European operator said that using the 700 MHz band will improve mobile coverage in rural areas across Germany. It also announced that more than 3,000 antennas at around 1,100 sites are transmitting 5G over 700 MHz frequencies.
